BACK

Miraj, a small town in the South of Maharashtra, came to its full cultural bloom after the famous classical vocalist Ustad Abdul Karim Kahn came to settle there in the end of the 19th century. Subsequently a clan of sitarmakers, or rather tanpuramakers, set up their bussiness in Miraj, to supply the musicians with instruments. Ustad Abdul Karim Khan Miraj is especially known for it's outstanding quality of tanpura's. The pumpkins grown in the aera are perfectly suited to use in the making of the big sized male tanpura's.
The instrumentbuilders living there are all decendants of the builder that made the tanpura's for Ustad Abdul Karim Khan.
